Canadians Ahren Cadieux and Rich Van Huizen edged Orlando Irizarry-Roberto Rodriguez of Puerto Rico by a score of 16-21, 21-15, 15-12 to claim the bronze medal late March at the first event of the season of the NORCECA Continental Beach Volleyball Circuit held in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands.

The USA-1 Team of Jason Wight and Michael Bruning came out victorious in the match for the gold medal by defeating the Cuban team of Sergio Gonzalez and Karell Peña in consecutive sets by scores 22-20 and 21-17. Cadieux and Van Huizen were defeated in a close semi-final by the USA team by scores of 25-23 and 21-19, while the Cubans reached the final by defeating the Puerto Ricans by scores of 33-31, 21-16.

“The event provided us with an ideal opportunity to evaluate where we are at in our preparation for the FIVB World Tour,” stated Van Huizen. “We played some meaningful games and we’ll resume training at Beach Blast with a stronger focus on what we’ve learned. There were also high winds and hot temperatures in Grand Cayman which just can’t be replicated in Canada in the winter time,”he continued. “We feel good about the trip and the direction we are headed.”

The Third Norceca Continental Beach Volleyball Circuit awards points for the XXI Central American and Caribbean Games 2010 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. This year¹s events include Cayman Islands (March 25-30), Guatemala (April 1-6), Dominican Republic (8-13), Manzanillo, Mexico (May 13-18), Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (May 20-25), Pachuca, Mexico (May 27-June 1), Jamaica (June 24-29), Trinidad Tobago (July 18-20),
Nicaragua (August 26-31) and Barbados (November 6-8)

The Canadian beach duo of Ahren Cadieux and Rich Van Huizen posted their first major upset of the US$175,000 Bahrain Open Wednesday when they defeated the defending champions of the event Nummerdor-Schuil of the Netherlands.
Playing partners for the first-time they were seeded 16th in the 32-team Main Draw. Cadieux and VanHuizen posted a 21-18 and 30-28 victory in 57 minutes over the top-seeded Nummerdor-Schuil to snap the Dutch’s 22-match winning streak on both domestic and international tours since the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
“It was all about Rich today,” said Cadiuex about his 205 cm partner…Rich’s presence at the net can really make the difference, especially against the Dutch. They rank among the best teams in the world, so today’s win is really special.”
Their first lost of the event came at the hands of Germans Dollinger-Windscheif 0-2 (18-21, 19-21) but they got another go round today facing Fijalek-Prudel from Poland only to lose 0-2 (14-21, 16-21).
Prudel and Fijalek’s best previous SWATCH FIVB World Tour finish was a 13th two weeks ago in Dubai. Earlier this season at a FIVB event in the Czech Republic, Prudel and Fijalek advanced to the Prague Main Draw as the 43rd-seeded qualifying team. The next day, Prudel and the 22-year old Fijalek upset 2008 SWATCH tour champions Harley Marques and Pedro Salgado of Brazil in the first-round.
Cadieux and Van Huizen finished fifth.
Other Canadians, Ray Sewell and Martin Reader, finished 13th. They along with fellow Canadians, Podstawka – Hall will move on to Sanya, China to compete in the qualifier, November 10-16.

Canadian women’s team of Annie Martin and Marie-Andre Lessard coming off their fifth place finish in Dubai will compete in the main draw event in the tour stops in Phuket, Thailland, Nov. 4-9 and in Sanya, China, Nov. 11-16.

It felt like summer had finally arrived with bright blue sunny skies and warm temperatures, highlighting the Beach National Championships for a perfect weekend. With 16 divisions of men and women vying for champions from 14U-24U and two senior divisions there was an expanse of courts that seemed endless as it filled the beach at Ashbridges’ Bay, Toronto.

In the women’s top division the winning duo was Annie Martin and Dana Cook. They were Canada’s failed Olympic hopefuls for Beijing. They defeated Annie Boileau and Marie-Christine Mondor for gold after losing a close first game but coming back to win game two and three handily. Bronze went to the western team of Niemczewska-Moppett.

On the men’s side, the surprise winners were Matt Zybszewski and Josh Binstock. They took only two games to defeat Ehren Cadieux and new partner Jessie Lelliott who had to fight a hard three game match against the taller experienced team of Rich Van Huizen and Conrad Leinemann.

Van Huizen-Leinemann had played strategically through early pool play giving up most of their matches to move into the losers bracket. Van Huizen was nursing an injury which had earlier hampered the team’s drive to qualify for the Olympics. Their tough three game semi-final match had proved to much for them and they forfeited the bronze medal match to Simek-Kruger who had lost their semi-final match two-straight to the eventual champions.
