Stingers Take Gold

Markham Stingers win their first Provincial title
The Markham-Stouffville Stingers, 13U girls team went to their first Ontario Championship and came home with the gold.
This first year team from Markham, Stouffville and Uxbridge, was ranked in a four-way tie for first place going into the tournament. They knew the competition would be tough. There were 35 teams in their age division at the annual Ontario Championships held at RIM Park in Waterloo.
The Stinger Girls: Alexa Torrington, Alyssa Harding, Erin Lee, Jaime Fox, Katerina Dimov, Kelsey Fuchs, Lauryn Renzella, Monda Shokri, Rhyena Miller and Sarah Ali; coached under the direction of Mike Lynch and Nikki MacKinnon, had their sights set on a medal and were truly rewarded for their teamwork and determination.
Coach Lynch told his team, “You never know when you may get to that point again in volleyball and have a chance to win something that big so play your hardest and hold nothing back.” “They certainly did that and more. They are an extremely close team and it showed this weekend.”
Their most difficult match was against a team who was co-ranked number one, the Aurora Storm Bolts. Although both teams were ranked one, the two teams had never played each other in the regular season. Meeting the Bolts in the semi-finals was definitely a challenge for the girls, but the Stingers pulled through triumphantly with scores of 25-17, 18-25, 15-11 to move onto the finals. The gold medal match was against the Scarborough Titans Omicron. The Stingers came out victorious winning in two games, and securing the gold medal.
Congratulations to the Markham-Stouffville Girls U13 Team for taking the 2010 OVA Provincials championship!
