Canadians Martin Reader and Ray Sewell defeated Orlando Irizarry and Joseph Gil of Puerto Rico 2-1 (21-17, 18-21, 15-8) to win the gold medal in men’s competition on Sunday at the season opening stop at Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands on the 2010 NORCECA beach volleyball circuit.

Both finalists went to the limit in their respective semi final matches. Reader and Sewell edged compatriots Maverick Hatch of Comox, BC and Ben Saxton of Calgary 11-21, 21-18, 15-10 while the Puerto Ricans edged Jeff Moran and Ivan Mercer of the U.S., 14-21, 21-14, 15-10.

The bronze medal went to Americans Moran and Mercer who scored an exciting 21-15, 12-21, 19-17 victory over Hatch and Saxton.

In women’s competition, Puerto Ricans Yarleen Santiago and Dariam Acevedo won the gold medal defeating Brooke Langston and Heather Lowe of the U.S., 21-14, 21-18. Earlier on Sunday, the Puerto Ricans scored a 21-16, 21-18 semi final victory against Canadians Jamie Broder of Victoria and Kristina Valjas of Toronto 21-16, 21-18.

The women’s bronze went to Mexicans Martha Revuelta and Vanessa Virgen who defeated the Canadians 21-14, 21-17.
