Wildcats Down Bears

North Bay’s Widdifield Wildcats junior girls volleyball team re-captured the Scarlet and Gold title over the weekend at Chippewa Secondary School to repeat as the tournament champions.

They finished first overall in pool play, not relinquishing a single set. Moving on to the quarter-final, the Wildcats played the St. Charles Cardinals of Sudbury, defeating them in straight sets, 25-9, 25-8.

During the semifinals, the Wildcats faced one of their Northern Ontario Secondary School (NOSSA) rivals, Sir James Dunn of Sault Ste. Marie.

These two teams met each other one month earlier in the finals at the Cardinal Classic in Sudbury, where the Wildcats won in straight sets, as they did again Saturday winning 25-21, 25-11.

In the other semifinal, the Chippewa Raiders fell to the St. Joseph-Scollard Hall Bears in straight sets.

In the final the Wildcats downed a determined Bears team in straight sets (25-22, 25-15) to claim the title.

The Wildcats will head next to Sudbury at the end of the month, as the returning champions for the Nickel Classic.

The Scarlet and Gold tournament attracted 24 teams from all around Northern Ontario.

Having three North Bay teams advancing to the semifinals speaks of the calibre of teams being produced in the district.
