Breakers 14U Silver at McGregor Cup
The Northumberland Breakers 14U girls team brought home the silver medal this past weekend from the Ontario Volleyball Association’s McGregor Cup tournament in Bowmanville.
It was the second tournament of the season for this Breakers squad.
After tying for fifth place last month in the Provincial Cup tournament, the Breakers arrived with determination and their game faces on for what was going to be a long and exciting day of volleyball.
Their first game of the day was against the Maverick Rattlers from Ottawa. The Breakers came out strong and were relentless, winning both sets.
In Round 2, they faced the Clarington Grizzlies, once again winning in straight sets. Both offensively and defensively, the Breakers were on top of their game.
After pool play, the Breakers were in first place going into the playoffs where they faced DRVC Orange. The Breakers swept them 25-16 and 25-10 and moved on to the next round.
In the semifinals they faced off against a very strong Aurora Storm Bolts team. The Breaker girls played a very tough opening match, but came up short losing to Aurora 25-17.
Thanks in part to some strong serving and relentlessness, the girls rallied back claiming the next two sets 25-13 and 15-8, sending them to the gold medal match.
DRVC (Durham Region Volleyball Club) proved to be the match of the day for the Breakers, and the girls came up short in straight sets, losing 25-12 and 25-18.
The silver medal was a great way for the girls to come back from their previous tournament.
