It was bitter sweet when former Durham Attack coach Keith Wills took the reins of the Concordia University College of Alberta Thunder Women’s Volleyball Team as he embarked upon the next chapter in his coaching career.
After a very successful stint as the Region 4 Athlete Development Chair, including two Gold medals and Silver in 3 years, along with his duties at Durham Attack, he set his sights on the very competitive Alberta Colleges League. On one hand Keith would miss the generous support of the Durham Attack club family, and on the other Durham Attack and Region 4 would miss his expertise in athlete and coaching development.

When Keith took the reins of the Concordia volleyball program in 2009, many CUCA faithful thought he would be just the person to take the Thunder into perennial CCAA tournament contention. He had the background, the competitive fire, and the right connections to build a great program in just a few years. They just didn’t know how soon CUCA would become that competitive. In just his first season as the Thunder head coach, Wills led the Thunder to their first ACAL Gold Medal appearance.

What was even more impressive was the fact that the Thunder also achieved their first Gold Medal appearance at the Western Canadian College Championship tournament in Saskatoon. Concordia finished the 2009 season with a 20-3 overall record.

“We are certainly moving in the right direction,” Wills said.
