U17s Take First Step
There’s a stirring in the St. Thomas volleyball community.
A ripple … not a tidal wave has carried a core of local enthusiasts to engage this season in Ontario Volleyball Association tournament play.
Is it the blinking awake of a full-blown club that will blossom some day in the future?
Perhaps.
But, for now, it’s an under-17 girls team, clad in purple and black, taking on the established clubs on OVA courts.
There have been whisperings for years about a club in St. Thomas. Numerous young athletes have gone to other teams in the region. There are organizations, to varying degrees, in London, West Lorne, Strathroy, Dorchester, Lambeth, Woodstock, Stratford. But it takes an incredible amount of dedication to get an all-inclusive club off the ground.
Enter, at this point, Deb Austin and Diana Hatch, teachers at New Sarum Public School with of-age daughters, who have put things in motion with their St. Thomas Volleyball Club.
It’s a single team right now of girls ages 15 and 16 who have a passion for the game.
