OCAA Athlete of the Week

Kerissa Van Amersfoort, this week’s top female athlete built a strong case for being named as the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association athlete of the week, with her near-record performance on the volleyball court in a home game Saturday against Sheridan.

Her 12 service aces in Niagara’s 3-1 defeat of the Bruins was one shy of the provincial record. The third-year community and justice services program major from Blyth, near Goderich, also collected three kills and three blocks to end the match with a game-high 19 points.

“Kerissa did a great job with her serving. She set the tone with our team having a total of 20 serving aces against Sheridan. To nearly tie or break an OCAA record is very impressive,” head coach Kerby Bentley said.

Both Niagara volleyball teams rebounded from losses in North Bay to Nipissing with convincing victories on Saturday to improve their records to 2-3 in league play. Only three sets were needed in the men’s game — 25-17, 25-16, 25-23 — while the Knights defeated the Sheridan women in four sets — 25-15, 23-25, 25-15, 25-6.
