Canada Connection

Canada is known for many things: free health care, hockey and the birthplace of the renegade member of the X-Men, Wolverine.

For the UMBC (University Maryland Baltimore County) women’s volleyball team, Canada is also the homeland for freshman Ali Loynachan (Whitby, Ontario), sophomore Sarah Joy (Ottawa, Ontario) and senior Kira Giles (Winnipeg, Manitoba). Both players and coaching staff member speak highly of these three young women who have aided the volleyball team tremendously in their quest for an America East Conference tournament berth for the second year in a row.

Loynachan, Joy, and Giles have handled themselves so well both on and off the volleyball court, that head coach Ian Blanchard continues to recruit players from our neighbors above the U.S. border. Since the volleyball team is 21 percent Canadian, The Retriever Weekly wanted to get their thoughts on America, playing volleyball for UMBC and, of course, the important part of the Canadian lifestyle: Tim Horton’s Donuts.
