Canada Global Cup Champs
Canada reeled off six straight victories to win the Global Cup women’s world senior volleyball championships for players aged 50 and over.
The Canadian team beat Latvia, Brazil, the U.S., and Germany to advance against Russia. The Canadians needed to beat the Russians, the defending champions, twice to take the title.
For luck, the team had placed a Tooney under one of the net posts.
“We all pulled together when it really counted,” commented Monica Hitchcock, power player and Team Canada captain (National team 1977-86). It also helped that we had Marg Negenman (MVP at US Open last May, Canadian National team 1977/8) anchoring us on right side.”
The elated team boisterously sang “Oh Canada” from the top of the stands with gold medals around their necks and pride in their voices. This win makes back-to-back Global Cup victories for Canada. In 2008 the Canadian men’s team was the last team standing after an incredible bout with team USA.
