Katherine Zakrzewski lands near her partner Julie Rodrique.

Julie Rodrigue of Quebec City and Katherine Zakrzewski of Toronto nearly upset the top-seeded British pair in qualifying on Wednesday to open the 14th and final stop on the FIVB World Tour women’s beach
volleyball circuit in Phuket, Thailand.

Rodrigue and Zakrzewski, competing for the second time together, opened the qualifying round Wednesday with a victory over compatriots Heather Bansley of Waterdown, Ont., and Liz Maloney of Toronto 21-12, 21-13, their first ever victory together in international play.

The players in that match knew each other well. Rodrigue had played with Bansley at the Francophone Games last month and they won the bronze medal while Maloney has played with Zakrzewski in the past….

Marie-Andree Lessard and Annie Martin compete in the main draw on Thursday. They are seeded 16th and open against Lauren Fendrick and Ashley Ivy of the U.S., seeded 17th. Second round matches are also slated for today.
