Thunderwolves Slow Start
The Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s volleyball team started their two-game southern Ontario road trip Saturday night at Waterloo where they lost 3-1 to a balanced Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks squad. Scores in the sets were 14-25, 26-24, 13-25 and 19-25.
Head coach Chris Green’s team received great contributions from several freshmen, led by setter Jenna McDonald who had 27 assists and 17 digs. Jorie Daymond led the team with 15 points, including 11 kills, two stuff blocks and two service aces.
Maddison Kluke and Katelyn Mayba added eight and seven kills, respectively while Ashley Baer had 16 digs at libero.
Laurier’s powerful attack was paced by Kaitlyn Sauder and Julie Gordon who both had 13 kills. Setter Lauren Carter played a great game with 49 assists on the evening.
“Tonight four of our starting six players were first year players. As usual they had brilliant moments and moments of youth,” said Green. “In the first set we could not find rhythm struggling with passing and defense. By the second set the girls found a strong rhythm in all facets and controlled the play throughout. They attacked and adapted well to Laurier and that set we committed no attack errors, showing great patience and trust,” Green said.
….The Thunderwolves fall to 0-4 in the OUA regular season. after their loss to Guelph Gryphons, Sunday afternoon at Guelph. Set scores were 25-10, 25-15, 25-13.
