Marie-Andree Lessard of Ville LaSalle, Que., and Annie Martin of Sherbrooke, Que., lost their two matches on Thursday at the 13th stop on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour circuit in Sanya, China. The eighth seeded Canadian team will be ranked 25th for the tournament.

Lessard and Martin lost their first round match to 20-year old Danielle Remmers and 18-year old Sophie van Gestel of the Netherlands 21-14, 15-21, 15-12. In the repechage they fell to Ying Huang and Xi Zhang of China 21-10, 21-17.

“It didn’t go as we well as we had planned,” said Martin. “We faced a new Dutch pairing and they were ready to play. We just didn’t put enough pressure on them defensively and we let them feel too comfortable out there.”
“We had beaten the Chinese team last year but they are to tall girls and this time they really used their height to their advantage.”

The Canadian pair will compete at the World Tour’s season finale next week in Phuket, Thailand.
