Another New Team Takes Court
The Huskies are taking on the province. Girls from North Hastings High School have started practicing as the Huskies Volleyball Club, the first club team to come out of the area to compete in the Ontario Volleyball Association tournament series this year from November to April.
Coach Adam Palmer says he got the idea to start a team from some of his fellow high school coaches he met in Toronto while he was completing his level three coaching certificate program.
“One of the biggest issues that we face in North Hastings is that we don’t have the access to club play as much as some of the teams that we play,” says Palmer. “It makes it harder to compete when they have that extra time to develop skills and a knowledge of the team.”
“So, one of the coaches suggested to start our own club, so I looked into it and that is what we are doing now.”
After coaching girls volleyball for a number of years, Palmer says he has seen a huge jump in popularity within the sport at the school. So much so that 20 kids went to Celtic Volleyball Camp this summer to refine their skills.
With the addition of the new club, he feels that this will give local female players a chance to play against some of the best in their age level and refine their skills and knowledge of the game.
“It is going to be a developmentally-focused team,” says Palmer. “It will focus on getting the skills and tactics of the game in place so there is a better understanding of the game when it comes to the season.”
The Huskies Volleyball Club will compete in the Under 15 or 16 level of Ontario-wide tournament circuit, with the goal of making to provincials at the end of the season.
