New Girls Club in East York
Girls can now play volleyball competitively close to their East York homes.
Chris Lopez started an OVA club recently at Earl Grey Senior Public School.
“I was driving all the way out to Etobicoke one season and then to southeast Scarborough the next to find a volleyball club,” he said.
“Being a soccer parent, I’m no stranger to travelling for my daughter’s sporting events, but having three other little ones at home and another due at the end of the month made me really want to limit the amount of time I spent in the car. East York didn’t have an indoor volleyball club and I have always dreamed of starting one. It was the right time to do it now that my older daughter is the right age,” he said.
Lopez played the sport competitively in high school and with the Scarborough Solars Club organization, then at the University of Guelph and then with the OVA beach tour. He has a degree in human kinetics and is a strength coach and personal trainer.
Debbie Kriz, who heard about Lopez starting the not-for-profit club, took a national coaching certification program last summer so she could assist Lopez. She has a daughter who was interested in playing.
The club is for girls born in 1997 and 1998 in the 13U level. They meet at Earl Grey Senior Public School, 100 Strathcona Ave., south of Danforth Avenue and east of Pape Avenue.
The club runs until April on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Team tryouts are Oct. 27 and 29 from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. The season starts Nov. 3.
