Canada in Semifinals at NORCECA

Team Canada
Tim Gourlay of Grande Prairie, Alta., came off the bench in the fourth set and contributed 15 points in Canada’s 21-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23, 15-13 victory over the Dominican Republic in Thursday’s quarterfinal at the North, Central America and Caribbean Confederation (NORCECA) men’s volleyball championships in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
With the victory, the Canadians, ranked 21st in the world, advance to the semifinals against Cuba.
Gourlay, a standout with the Canadian university champions University of Alberta Golden Bears, is wearing Canadian colours for the first time and had seen limited action in the round robin portion of the tournament in which Canada went 2-1.
“I wanted to bring some energy to the team and I guess it worked,” said Gourlay, the MVP in last season’s Canadian university championship final. “I just came in and did what I had to do. This is a whole new level of playing for me and I’m trying to adjust to it as fast as I can. This is why we trained so hard for the last month.”
