Team Canada has strong start in Beirut
OTTAWA -Team Canada won its opening matches in men’s and women’s beach volleyball on Monday at the Jeux de la Francophonie (the Francophone Games) being held this week in Beirut, Lebanon.
In men’s play Jessi Lelliott of Kelowna, B.C., and Ben Saxton of Calgary defeated a pair from Niger 21-5, 21-5. On the women’s side, Heather Bansley of Waterdown, Ont., and Julie Rodrigue of Quebec City beat a team from Congo 21-9, 21-11.
Team Quebec also posted wins in its opening matches. Marie-Christine Mondor and Isabelle Rancourt beat an Ivory Coast pair 21-2, 21-5 while for the men François-Guy Allaire and Simon Fecteau-Boutin posted victories over the Seychelles Islands and Cyprus.
Team New Brunswick lost their opening matches. For the women, Jill Blanchard and Cheri Campbell fell 21-12, 21-11 to Switzerland and Corey Akerley and Michael Waugh also lost to a Swiss pair in men’s play 21-13, 20-22, 15-9.
Round robin play continues on Tuesday.
