Canada fifth at NORCECA Championships
BAYAMON, Puerto Rico – Tiffany Dodds of Lucky Lake, Sask., Brittney Page of Vernon, B.C., Marisa Field of Kelowna, B.C., all reached double figures in points to lead Canada to a 25-22, 25-21, 25-19 victory over Mexico in the fifth place match at the NORCECA women’s volleyball tournament.
The Dominican Republic won the gold medal defeating Puerto Rico in five sets (19-25, 25-23, 16-25, 32-30, 15-8) while in the bronze medal match, Cuba overcame a 0-2 deficit to beat the U.S., for the second time this week 17-25, 16-25, 28-26, 25-16, 15-11.
Dodds tabulated 13 points on 12 spikes and one block while Page earned 11 points on seven spikes and four blocks and Field 10 points on five blocks and five spikes. Julie Young of Red Deer, Alta., had 12 digs.
Canada ends the week-long tournament with a 3-3 record. The squad was 1-2 in round robin play losing to the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico before earning a victory against Trinidad and Tobago.
In the quarterfinal the Canadians lost in four sets to the U.S., ranked second in the world. Victories over Costa Rica and Mexico made for a happy ending for the squad which qualified less than a month ago for next year’s world championships.
Six of the eight countries here this week, including Canada, have qualified for next year’s world championships. This week’s champion earns a berth at the Grand Champions Cup this November in Japan.
