Garrett May jousts with Yacine Louati of France
Garret May and William Sidgwick were the only Canadian team to advance out of their pool to the first round of the FIVB U19 Youth World Championships in Alayna, Turkey. The 13th seeded team in the tournament, they advanced last Thursday by defeating Louati-Villard from France, the Turkish team of Tayga-Anil and Chow-Del Bianco, the other main draw team from Canada all in straight sets. The team was eliminated Saturday in a heart-breaker to Itally’s Bondi-Ottaviani 2-1 with scores of 21-18, 18-21, 15-12.
In the women’s division, Victoria Altomare and Melissa Humana-Paredes ranked 11th won only one match in their pool play defeating Schneider-Seyfferth of Germany 2-1 (8-21, 23-21, 15-12). They did not advance. The team of Rebecca Crosier and Alexandra Hudson did not make it past the second round of qualifications.
