Bright Future on the Beach

12U girls just wanna have fun!
Our first warm and sunny weekend, Aug. 1-2, the OVA hosted Provincial Championships at Ashbridges Bay in Toronto, for 12U-16U male and female beach athletes. Over 210 teams battled in their age divisions for the chance to be a Provincial Champion.
Pool play began for 12-14U athletes at 9 a.m. sharp Saturday morning to set up rankings for the afternoons playoffs. All divisions offered tough match ups including our two youngest divisions 12U Girls and 13U Boys. In the 12U girl’s division the team of Miric/Bischof defeated Bond/Kaake for the gold while Thistlewaite/Kernan defeated Roscoe/Costanzo to win the bronze medal. On the boys side the team of MacNeil/Sinclair defeated Felinczak/Macintyre for gold. Spragg/Smith edged out Melchionna/Christensen for bronze.
Josh Nichol, beach coordinator, was impressed with the level of play shown by the age levels. “It was great to see how far the level of play has improved this season. Hopefully all the teams continue to enjoy the sport and play for years to come.”
The 13U age division has offered excitement all season, and Provincials was no exception. In the Tier 2 division Ragonetti/Clark recovered from a tough semi-final loss to win the bronze defeating Smith/Egan. In the gold medal match Fryday/Talyor came out on top vs. Blumetrath/Sernoskie. In tier 1 it was the usual suspects battling for top spot in the 13U division. Chiasson/Nathoo continued their winning ways as they defeated Whyte/Kong in the bronze medal match. In the gold medal match Lahaie/Beltran won a tough battle, beating Bozinoski/Mammolite in two games.
14U Boys offered one of the toughest tiers at Provincials. All 15 teams were placed into one tier, it was a tough road to the finals for Brar/Wardak. They won four straight matches to capture the gold medal defeating Grossinger/Jordan in the final. In the bronze medal match Scheerhorn/Crain narrowly defeated Nguyen/Murdock winning the bonze in three sets.
The 14U Girls division offered the most surprises on this year’s tour. Every weekend it seemed like a new group of teams would find there way into the top five. As a result all three tiers were competitive. In Tier 3 Toner/Oliveira tore through the 9-team draw to win the gold medal defeating the team of Perry/Behan in 2 sets. In the bronze medal match Lawrence/Kamphuis and Donnelly/Millar each won a set by at least 5 points setting the stage for a tough 3rd set. Donnelly/Millar pulled away winning the third set 15-9.
In Tier 2 the top 2 seeds showed why they deserved such a high rank. Boright/Tsiofis and O’leary/Legree both won their pool and battled their way to the final. The final was arguably the best match of the day. In the first set Boright/Tsiofis survived the match winning 22-20, in the second set Boright/Tsiofis jumped out to an early lead. O’Leary/Legree battled back down from 11 to keep the set close. Both teams went back and forth as the set climbed into the mid twenties. In the end Boright/Tsiofis earned the gold winning 26-24 in the second set. In the bronze medal match Shabsove/Rolfe-Hughes def. Timermans/Spence-Coleman in two tough sets.
In Tier 1 the team of Fyer/Longman continued there winning ways by capturing gold. They defeated the team of Petcoff/Leidl in 2 sets. McLean/McDougall battled with Lumsden/Storoschuk for the Bronze medal. Each team won a set as McLean/McDougall won 24-22. Lumsden/Storoschuk bounced back to win 21-17 in the second set. Lumsden/Storoschuck carried their momentum from the second set into the third winning 15-7 to earn the bronze.
We would like to thank all the athlete and parents for a great season. It wasn’t easy transitioning to a new registration system, battling stormy weather in Cobourg or garbage strikes in Toronto. We appreciate all of your patience and support during the season and look for forward to seeing you on the tour in 2010.
