Canada Bests Australia

The Canadian men’s national volleyball team defeated Australia in an exciting five set match Wed. night at Queen’s University in Kingston as part of an exhibition series being held this week.

Following Tuesday’s loss in Ottawa, Canada battled hard, finishing 3-2 (22-25, 25-22, 21-12, 25-27, 15-11). Right side Gavin Schmitt was lead scorer with 23 points, and Queen’s University alum Adam Simac had 4 blocks.

“This is a really great way to promote volleyball in Canada,” said head coach Glenn Hoag. “It’s nice to play to a supportive crowd and show off the talent of our players.”

The Canadians are using the exhibition series with the Australians as preparation for the 2010 World Championship Qualification Tournament that is being held in Cuba in early August.

The Canadians will play Australia again on Saturday at the Palais des Sports in Sherbrooke at 8 pm for the last match in the series. Tickets are available online at www.volleyball.ca.
