Ontarians Edwards & Fabris in National Team

Ontario Strikes Twice – Volleyball Canada Announces the Senior Women’s National Team Roster On Thursday, May 21, 2009 some very big news began to reach courts and gyms around Ontario. Volleyball Canada’s announcement of the Senior Women’s Indoor A & B National Team athletes for the 2009 international volleyball season contained a couple of familiar names. Outside Hitter Kristina Fabris of Sudbury and setter Tess Edwards of Ottawa will be representing Ontario in the National Team Program.

Kristina worked her way from an “open” try-out, beating out directly invited athletes to earn her spot on the Ontario Provincial Team in 2003. She took a year to play for the Junior National Team in 2004 and then returned to the Provincial Team in 2005. Kristina was a member of the gold medal winning team at Canada Games; this success is no surprise to those who know her family well, as her father was one of Canada’s elite badminton players during his prime.

“Kristina’s story brings to light the fact that not all elite athletes are early bloomers and with determination the National Team can be a goal for any young athlete from anywhere in Ontario.” Jason Trepanier, OVA Technical Director. Tess comparably honed her skills on the 2003 and 2004 Ontario Provincial Team. A native of Kanata, Tess is a Quest for Gold recipient and was honoured as an OUA East All Star this past season with the Ottawa Gee Gee’s. Both Kristina and Tess are great examples for young Ontario volleyball players.

Some kind words from a former mentor:

“I am thrilled for Kristina and Tess and proud of all their accomplishments. Both of these young ladies are incredibly talented athletes and extremely wonderful and deserving people. As alumni of the Team Ontario program they helped bring a great deal of success to Women’s volleyball in this province; I know they will take those strengths and apply them to their time with the National Team. I truly wish them all the best and much success as they begin their careers with the Senior National Team Program and compete at the FISU Games in Belgrade, Serbia this summer.”
