The Thunder claimed at least a place in any argument about a true national age group champion after spiking the Durham Attack Black 25-18, 25-22 in the gold medal match at the Canadian West Open volleyball championships at the Olympic Oval in Calgary.
Seeded No. 2 entering the 88-team tournament, the Thunder survived a semifinal scare before rallying to overcome the third-seeded Brandon (Manitoba) CVCs 20-25, 25-11, 15-6 to qualify for the final.
