Lakehead Summer Camps and SPIKES
Lakehead Thunderwolves Volleyball and head coach Chris Green announced this year’s summer volleyball camp schedule.
Instructors will include coach Green, head coach of the Lakehead women’s program and head coach of Team Canada men’s junior national team which is heading to Pune, India this June for the World Championships. Many of the Lakehead women’s volleyball players will take part as guest instructors as will Lakehead assistant coaches Chuck Badanai and Jenn McKenzie.
The camps begin July 6 and run through to the end of August and will take place at the former PACI high school Gymnasium.
The week-long camps are split into co-ed age groups: Grades 5 and 6, Grades 7 and 8, Grades 9 and 10, and Grades 10-12. There will also be special camps for girls and boys only at the end of August for athletes in the Grades 9-12 categories.
A total of four Grades 5-6 and 7-8 camps will be SPIKES Volleyball camps; run by Yolanda MacKinnon – an Ontario Volleyball (OVA) SPIKES clinician. SPIKES Volleyball is an instructional program designed by the OVA for younger grassroots athletes. The program concentrates on teaching volleyball fundamentals and skills in a fun and athlete-centred environment.
MacKinnon said SPIKES is the perfect way for young athletes to develop their volleyball chops.
“SPIKES provides a fun, supportive environment to learn volleyball skills and, depending on the skill level of the participants,” MacKinnon said. “The game is modified to increase early success and to ensure that every athlete is involved with each play.”
