Renaissance Man

In the world of volleyball Sam Schachter pulls double duty.

His left foot firmly tucked in a sneaker and planted on a shining hardcourt, his right foot bare with his toes dug in the sand, such is the persona of Richmond Hill resident and volleyball ace Sam Schachter.

Half beach volleyball stand-out, half traditional six-man star, the 18-year-old is a volleyball renaissance man excelling in both disciplines of the sport.

A first year business student at Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo and a graduate of Westmount
Collegiate Institute in Thornhill, Mr. Schachter is coming off an impressive and record-setting rookie season with the Laurier Golden Hawks.

He was eighth in Ontario scoring 3.57 points per game. He led the province in service aces with 40 and also lead his Golden Hawk team to their first playoff appearance in ten years.

He also managed to spike his way to some impressive hardware, collecting the Ontario University Athletics men’s volleyball Rookie of the Year award and just last week, the 6′5″ left side/power earned a spot on the Canadian Interuniversity Sport all-rookie team, making him the first Golden Hawk male volleyball player to take home a national award.

Such accolades were just the icing on the cake for what he called a great year.

“I really enjoyed this season a lot. There is a lot of talent on our team and it was nice to make a contribution and get us to the playoffs.

“Winning these awards was nice. I didn’t really expect to win, but doing so I was really happy for my coach and my teammates. They helped me a bunch this year and they put me in a position to do well. Their influence is a large part of these awards,” Mr. Schachter said.
