Nipissing Hosts CCAA

The CCAA Women’s Volleyball coach and player of the year were announced Wed. at the National Championships, being held at Nipissing University, in North Bay.

Chris Wilkins, coach of the OCAA Champion Humber College Hawks, was chosen coach of the year. Wilkins coached the Hawks to an impressive 47-2-2 overall record. Over the past 11 years, the women’s Volleyball program at Humber has captured 10 medals in Provincial play, five of them gold. Wilkins takes great care in ensuring his athletes’ success both on the court and in the classroom; the women’s volleyball team continues to be the most successful academically at Humber. The Humber Hawks are seeded fifth in the CCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championships.

Karlee Diesing, the third-year captain of the Capilano University Blues, was named player of the year. A team leader both on and off the court, Diesing is one of the most outstanding defenders in the British Columbia Colleges Athletics Association (BCCAA). It has been an outstanding year for Diesing, she was also named BCCAA Player of the Year in 2008/09, and a BCCAA first-team all-star.

Deising was also named a CCAA All Canadian. Other players winning a CCAA All Canadian award include: Tara Thibault from the St. Thomas University Tommies, Katherine Seys from the NAIT Ooks, Sheila McNee from the University of British Columbia/Okanagan Heat, Katie Graves from the Red Deer College Queens, Sophie Bergeron from the Bois- de-Boulogne Cavaliers, Genevieve Plante from the Lionel-Groulx Nordiques, Landis Doyle from the Humber College Hawks, Leigh Dreher from the Vancouver Island University Mariners, and Stefanie Hancock from the Nipissing University Lakers.

The games began yesterday at Nipissing Univeristy. The Bronze medal match begins at 5pm Saturday.
