The last thing you want is to run smack into the top seed to start the day.
That was the fate awaiting the Aurora Golden Eagles Wednesday morning for the quarter-final round of the OFSAA senior girl’s volleyball quad-A championships in Brampton.
But it was the ninth-seeded Golden Eagles emerging as the winner against the highly touted Sinclair Celtics of Whitby in a three-set nailbiter (25-15, 15-25, 15-13) to claim a berth in the semifinal and assure itself a chance to play for a medal for the third consecutive year.
The victory sent Aurora into a semifinal clash with Kitchener’s Forest Heights Trojans who entered the 16-team event as the No. 5 seed.
Aurora claimed a berth in the playoff round with a 2-1 record in pool play, including a 25-16, 25-20 win over Barrie’s Innisdale Invaders to secure second place in its four-team round-robin grouping. Aurora opened play with a 25-20, 25-23 win over No. 8 seed Mayfield Mavericks before bowing in three sets (21-25, 25-17, 15-10) to third-seeded Birchmount Park Panthers.
