Eagles Prep to Fly North
After some tense moments, Vicki Ward finally could exhale.
The coach of the Ernestown Eagles senior girls volleyball team, whose squad had been fundraising for a costly potential trip to the provincial double-A championship in Kenora for several weeks, booked a ticket to that tournament in dramatic fashion.
The Kingston Area champion Eagles rallied from a 1-0 deficit to beat Embrun Secondary School 2-1 (23-25, 25-19, 15-10) in the Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association final in Perth.
“It’s a bit of a relief for me,” said an ecstatic Ward.
“[Embrun] played really well all day and gave us a good run. We were a little nervous at first, but we got our confidence back and had a really dominant second game.”
The Eagles, who swept the previously unbeaten Kingston Blues in the county championship on February 22 at Bartlett Gym, figure to have a $9,000 travel bill for the trip to far-off Kenora for the OFSAA championship March 9-11.
