Dinos Dump Montreal, Face UBC in Final
Led by fifth-year left side Lauren Perry (18 kills, 17 digs) and Canada West player of the year Holly Harper (13 kills, 16 digs) the No. 4-seeded Calgary Dinos upset the No. 1 Montreal Carabins in five sets (19-25, 25-13, 20-25, 27-25, 15-12), Friday night, in a thrilling late semi-final at the 2009 CIS women’s volleyball championship.
The Dinos, making their ninth straight appearance in the national tournament, will play for CIS gold against the No. 2 UBC Thunderbirds Saturday at 8 p.m. Atlantic Time. UBC, which edged Montreal 3-2 in last year’s final, swept No. 6 Laval earlier Friday in the first semi-final of the 2009 tournament.The Dinos advance to the national final for the first time since claiming the third CIS title in team history in 2004. Calgary has since captured CIS bronze four straight years, including in 2008 when they dropped a semi-final decision against Montreal.
The Carabins, the QSSF champions who led all 13 national polls this season and came into the semi-final duel sporting a 33-1 overall record against CIS competition, will face Laval for bronze Saturday at 4 p.m. Atlantic.
