Martin Gets Her Wish
Katie Martin recalls being in first grade and longingly watching Grade 4 students play volleyball in her school’s gym.
Now, the West Park Secondary School student not only gets to play, but will take her team to a region-wide competition this week.
Described as a strong all-around player for the senior girls AAA Warriors, Martin is pumped to head to the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association championship in Hamilton after a Monday afternoon Zone 4 title win over Sir Winston Churchill.
Also on the basketball and rowing teams, Martin said she has always felt an affinity for volleyball, where she’s the most vocal on the court.
“I’m the one always yelling stuff,” the 17-year-old said after Monday’s game.
Martin is just one member of a team that has clicked this year, coach Janet Lancaster said. The Warriors had a strong season in advance of SOSSA.
“I feel really confident we can do a good job if we bring our A game Wednesday,” she said.
