Sabres Honoured

The Sutton District High School 2008-09 senior boys volleyball team has put its school on the map this year – twice.
The team, led by coach Doug Denning, made school history in the world of athletics late last year after it advanced further in the Ontario finals than any other team in Sutton’s history.
After winning four matches in the highly competitive AA OFSAA volleyball tournament in Stratford last November, the team was honoured with the prestigious sportsmanship award.
The Sutton Sabres were voted to be the most sportsmanlike by OFSAA organizers, other coaches and referees.
“These are 10 well-behaved young men and wonderful Georgina community members as well as awesome volleyball players. I have been at Sutton for 20 years and this is, by far, the best group of young men I have ever had the privilege of being associated with,” coach Denning said.
Captain Ray Szeto couldn’t have been more proud. “Any one of the guys on the team could be the captain. They’re all leaders,” Ray said.
“Coming from a small town, nobody expects anything from you and here we come out of OFSAA with the sportsmanship award,” said Sabre Ryan Jaanusson.
“Coach Denning is a great inspiration to the team. He shows up every morning and we’ll all have fond memories of this experience. He’s not just a coach, but a friend,” said teammate Matt Luke on behalf of the team.
