Pedlow Growing into a Star

Standing at six-foot-six, Sam Pedlow is an intimidating presence — especially on the volleyball court, where he’s a star player for Queen’s University.
But it wasn’t always the case for the Barrie native. When he entered Grade 11 and his third year on the St. Peter’s Secondary School volleyball team, he was one of the shortest guys on the team.
“I was always the setter because I was always one of the smallest guys on the team,” Pedlow said.
But he had a huge growth spurt that year. And, in Grade 12, while he shine for St. Peter’s, his volleyball career took an important turn that led him along a path to post-secondary education.
“St. Peter’s, unfortunately, didn’t have a great volleyball team. It was disappointing,” Pedlow recalled. “But I had always played in the club program in Barrie, and in my final year of high school, I joined the Barrie Elites.”
It was a decision that would change his athletic career. Elites coaches Dave Gross and Doug Godin sported a different approach to the game — and to Pedlow.
“I kind of accredit my success to those two coaches,” Pedlow said. “They were young coaches who took a different approach. They were way more aggressive, and just really gung-ho about the sport. They
really whipped us into shape and also helped me get into the university system.”
