Knights Call it a Day

Niagara College’s volleyball teams were almost mirror images of one another at the Big Kahuna Classic tournament on the weekend.
Both the men’s and women’s teams bowed out of the two-day, four-team tournament with losses in yesterday afternoon’s semifinals, and they each had a player selected to the respective all-star squads.
Of the host teams, the never-say-die Lady Knights came the closest to advancing to the finals by extending their semifinal with Seneca to the five-set maximum.
Their strong finish against the Bruins nearly made up for a slow start that had the Knights teetering on the brink of elimination after dropping the opening sets 25-12, 25-10. But thanks to standout play from tournament all-star Kerissa Van Amersfoort – 10 kills, one block, one service ace – and Jaclyn Van Leerzem – nine kills, one block, one ace – Niagara rebounded with 25-10 and 25-16 victories before falling 15-9 in the deciding set.
