Excalibur Success Spikes

Trent University men’s volleyball program is gaining national prominence.
For the first time in its five-year history the Excalibur cracked the top Canadian College Athletic Association’s top 15 coming in 11th last week. They improved to 8-1 this year, moving into sole possession of second-place in the Ontario College Athletic Association’s East Division, with a tough 26-24, 25-23, 26-24 straight sets victory over cross-town rival Fleming Knights (Peterborough) at Trent.
While most Trent varsity teams compete in Ontario University Athletics (OUA), the volleyball teams opted for the OCAA for its infant years.
“The last few years we’ve had some firsts for the program,” Trent men’s head coach Rusty Haines said. “We’re currently 11th in the country, which is a first for us, and third in the province, a couple of great accomplishments. “He says joining the OUA is a long-term goal, but the team is more concerned about being competitive at the OCAA level before jumping to the more competitive OUA.
Last year, Trent reached the OCAA championship tournament for the first time. This year it will be tougher as the OCAA has moved to a final four tournament instead of final eight.
