Knights Knuggets
So much for the sophomore jinx!
Two reigning Ontario Colleges Athletic Association rookies of the year are showing no signs of resting on their laurels on the volleyball court now that they are both in their second season at Niagara College.
All Steve Regier did was lead all players with 15 kills and three service aces for 18 points as the Knights swept St. Clair on Sunday in Windsor, avenging a loss in five sets in the season opener in Welland.
For his stellar play in the 25-19, 25-18 and 25-17 victories, Regier, who also is the team’s captain, is the Niagara College Boston Pizza male athlete of the week.
Kerissa Van Amersfoort, this week’s top female athlete, wasn’t quite as happy as Regier on the long ride home from Windsor. While she led the Knights with nine kills, two blocks for 11 points and six digs on defence her team wound up on wrong end of a sweep as Lambton took the sets 3-0: 25-21, 25-23 and 25-17.
She also scored in double digits Friday night on her home court, where Niagara defeated Lambton 3-0: 25-12, 25-18 and 25-20. In the Knights’ first official victory of the season, after losing three wins to forfeit, Van Amersfoort had eight kills, four stuffed blocks and two service aces for 14 points. She also had five digs on spike attempts.
Both volleyball teams are at home Friday, hosting Hamilton’s Mohawk College in their final league games before the holiday break.
