Canadian Beach Women 5th in Dubai
The Dubai Open is the first-ever international Beach Volleyball event to be staged in the United Arab Emirates and was held at the Jumierah Beach Park, October 5-10.
Annie Martin teamed up with fellow Canadian Marie-Andre Lessard for this event winning their opening match against the 12th ranked team of Campisi-Lozano from Spain, 2-0 (21-14, 21-13). Later that day they beat the high ranking team from Georgia, Saka-Rtvelo 2-1 (21-18, 19-21, 15-9). Their winning streak continued the following day against the French team of Giordano-Sarpaux, 2-0 (21-15, 21-17), until running up against the number one ranked team and ultimate gold medal winners from the US, Walsh-Branagh, in the fourth round. A final 2-1 lost to Austria’s Schwaiger-Schwaiger, (21-16, 19-21, 15-12) gave them a very successful fifth place finish.
Canada’s only entry in the men’s division, Reader-Sewell won their opening and only match against a Russian team of Moroz-Belov 2-1 (15-21, 21-12, 15-10). They finished 25th.
Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil of the Netherlands overcame a lop-sided setback in the first set in the men’s finale to defeat Germany’s Mischa Urbatzka and Jonas Reckermann in the All-European final gold-medal match.
