Riverdale’s Rachel Meyer tops in East
When the East Region winner was being announced at the 2008 Town Crier Athlete of the Year awards breakfast, Rachel Meyer wasn’t even paying attention.
Competing with Riverdale Collegiate in the TDSB South Region, the17-year-old didn’t think she was eligible for the East award. Meyer soon found out she was. “When they were listing all the things about the athlete they said national softball and provincial volleyball and I was like ‘I can be that girl’,” Meyer said on her way home from a softball evaluation camp in Buffalo, New York. “But then it got to the end and our male athlete Brandon (Barber) said, ‘That’s you. Get up there’,” she added with a laugh. “So it was surprising, but pretty cool to win.”
